Com o advento da era moderna e da poesia que surge no final do século XIX, passa-se a duvidar da ligação do texto literário à realidade. Negando o velho conceito de mimesis, críticos como Friedrich veem, na poesia moderna, um autotelismo que a fazia romper com a representação do mundo. Porém, outros poetas e críticos, como Mário Faustino, Adorno e Berardinelli, não conseguem desvencilhar a poesia das atividades da sociedade. A obra do poeta moderno Blaise Cendrars é dos exemplos de poesia que não se enquadra no modelo de Friedrich por estar ligada ao mundo, revelando as experiências que o poeta teve em sua própria vivência da realidade.
