O escritor francês Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) é um dos grandes mestres do conto fantástico francês. Em suas narrativas, o gênero aparece, por vezes, como uma forma de desvendar a realidade; nele, o fantástico não se opõe ao real, mas visa mostrar uma tensão entre o possível e o impossível, entre o comum e o extraordinário. Para criar o fantástico, Maupassant usa alguns elementos como a aparição, o fantasma, objetos ou partes do corpo humano e a figura feminina, que surge como um tema caro ao escritor.
