It will be analyzed the original character of Rousseau’s thought, his independence from rules and dogmas and his particular style, which adopts the construction of hypothesis as theoretical – and ethical, above all – since they meet the needs of man in the modern society. O artigo aborda o aspecto ético do pensamento de Rousseau e seu comprometimento com o devir histórico a partir de alguns conceitos desenvolvidos nos Discursos Sur les sciences et les arts, e Sur l’origine et les fondements de l’inégalité, e ainda no Contrat social, tais como a visão negativa acerca das ciências e artes, as noções de estado de natureza, amor-de-si e vontade geral.
