The notes included in the publication and the translation itself were made by this author. It recovers the trajectory of Gustave Flaubert up to the publication of Madame Bovary in 1857. Nuances found in Flaubert’s text are presented as a way to characterize it as the first modern novel. In fact, the work represents a breakthrough in the way of writing a novel and from that point on, the novel is not anymore a mere story, but it is above all style. Keywords: Madame Bovary. Publicado como apresentação à tradução de Madame Bovary, em 2001, pela Nova Alexandria – notas e tradução, também, da articulista –, este artigo recupera o percurso empreendido por Gustave Flaubert até a publicação da obra, em 1857. Ao mesmo tempo, são apresentadas as nuanças do texto fl aubertiano que permitem caracterizá-lo como o primeiro romance moderno: de fato, é uma obra de ruptura e, a partir de então, o romance não é mais apenas uma história, mas antes de tudo um estilo.
