Nuances found in Flaubert’s text are presented as a way to characterize it as the first modern novel. In fact, the work represents a breakthrough in the way of writing a novel and from that point on, the novel is not anymore a mere story, but it is above all style.

Publicado como apresentação à tradução de Madame Bovary, em 2001, pela Nova Alexandria – notas e tradução, também, da articulista –, este artigo recupera o percurso empreendido por Gustave Flaubert até a publicação da obra, em 1857. Ao mesmo tempo, são apresentadas as nuanças do texto fl aubertiano que permitem caracterizá-lo como o primeiro romance moderno: de fato, é uma obra de ruptura e, a partir de então, o romance não é mais apenas uma história, mas antes de tudo um estilo.
