No conto “Smarra ou les démons de la nuit”, publicado na França em 1821, Charles Nodier segue a linha do frenético, uma das formas da narrativa fantástica que emana da literatura romântica de evasão e prolonga a tendência do pré-romantismo inglês, conhecida como roman noir ou romance gótico. Entretanto, transforma essa modalidade da narrativa e, ao seguir uma lógica onírica, por meio de uma estrutura bastante complexa, o autor anuncia alguns procedimentos que serão utilizados nas narrativas contemporâneas.
