Over the subsequent two decades, the population was successful, obtaining the implementation of a School of Technology (FATEC) and a unit of the Universidade de São Paulo, called “USP-Leste”, both under the responsibility of the state government. The methodology focused on primary sources, using interviews with local leaders and activists, minutes of the UNIFESP University Council, and data obtained from the press and bibliographic research. |

O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar a constituição, a mobilização e os processos de negociação do Movimento pela Universidade Federal na Zona Leste da cidade de São Paulo, para a implantação de um campus da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) naquela região. Trata-se de um movimento popular cujas origens remontam ao histórico de mobilizações da região em torno de demandas por serviços públicos desde a década de 1940. Nos anos de 1980, as reivindicações locais incorporaram a demanda por ensino superior. Ao longo das duas décadas subsequentes, a população conquistou a implantação de uma Faculdade de Tecnologia (FATEC) e uma unidade da Universidade de São Paulo, a chamada USPLeste, ambas sob a responsabilidade do governo estadual.
