Poucos exemplares do romance contemporâneo se aproximam tanto duma dicção própria da poesia como A casa do diabo, de Mafalda Ivo Cruz. Trata-se, decerto, de um trabalho em prosa, de uma narrativa. Entretanto, os sentidos se encontram, no romance, em estado de tamanha plurissignificação que acabam fazendo da obra um exemplar híbrido, capaz tanto de estórias (por exemplo, as venturas e desventuras de uma mulher, a protagonista, mãe, amante e sem lugar num cenário nada propício) como, também, de um lirismo sempre a ponto de permitir aos vocábulos escapar de seu sentido convencionado.
