Questões relativas à governança de interesses sociais e de recursos ambientais em territórios rurais têm recebido especial destaque na literatura recente das ciências sociais sobre sustentabilidade ambiental. Este artigo propõe alguns temas necessários a uma agenda sociológica de estudos sobre o desenvolvimento rural sustentável. Enfatiza a problematização dos novos conflitos sociais decorrentes da emergência de instâncias descentralizadas de gestão dos territórios rurais, traçando uma breve síntese das literaturas européia e nacional.
