En Cuba, la literatura de los países socialistas jugó un papel trascendental en la formación de su sistema literario durante las décadas que van del sesenta al noventa. Miles de libros escritos en otros países socialistas y traducidos al español circularon en Cuba a través de una red nacional de librerías, bibliotecas, y del plan de estudios. Esta literatura no solo ponía al lector cubano en contacto con un archivo cultural excepcional, sino que también proveía modelos literarios, e informaba sobre lo que podía y no podía publicarse en un país socialista. El acceso a este tipo de literatura respondía a políticas culturales/editoriales tanto del país “emisor” como del país “receptor”: el estado “emisor” decidía qué exportar, literariamente hablando, y el “receptor” a su vez decidía cuáles de esas obras se recibirían.
