Finally, based on the studies cited, an analysis was made on how Poe used these elements - following the trend Gothic - to create in the reader the effect of psychological torture provided by the selected job. |

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar a maneira como Edgar Allan Poe, através da construção do tempo psicológico, cria o efeito de suspense e terror característicos da tortura. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa sobre a Inquisição Espanhola, baseado em autores como Kamen (1966), de modo a entender o período em que se passa a história do conto “O Poço e o Pêndulo”. Em seguida, foi feita uma pesquisa sobre a literatura gótica, a partir de contribuições de Rossi (2008) e com base nas características estilísticas de Poe, seguida de um estudo sobre os elementos estruturais do gênero conto e da construção do tempo em narrativas, fundamentado em autores como Todorov (1980), Gotlib (1995) e Moisés (1994).
