Partindo-se do pressuposto teorico de que o texto de autoria feminina e um palimpsesto e, como tal, comporta signifi cados subtextuais que, em permanente interacao com o plano do texto, desarticulam os pressupostos opositores e hierarquicos do universo patriarcal, o presente trabalho pretende fazer uma breve incursao a instancia narrativa do espaco em O despertar, obra-prima de Kate Chopin - importante nome do Realismo estadunidense -, para demonstrar como tal instancia comporta em si e dissemina nos demais elementos narrativos inter-ditos de contestacao do patriarcado. Para tanto, pretende-se examinar as configuracoes desse espaco e suas inter-relacoes subtextuais manifestadas nas implicacoes simbolicas da agua, do mar, do circulo e do proprio despertar da subjetividade feminina da protagonista da obra.Palavras-chave: O despertar.
