They translated some of their traditional songpoems into Portuguese, aiming at the publication of a book on their healthy subjects. They also translated the lyrics of a Brasilian traditional song from Portuguese into Maxakali, as an exercise in the Portuguese classes in the context of the Indian schools governmental program.

São abordadas traduções realizadas pelos Maxakali, povo indígena que vive no Vale do Mucuri em Minas Gerais, falantes da língua Maxakali, da família homônima Maxakali, do tronco lingüístico Macro-Jê. Trata-se de traduções para a língua portuguesa de cantos rituais Maxakali e da tradução para a língua Maxakali da letra de uma canção popular brasileira. As primeiras se realizaram no contexto de ofi cinas de pesquisa e tradução para a publicação do livro Hitupmã’ax/Curar (2008), de autoria dos professores Maxakali, que participam de curso para Formação Intercultural de Educadores Indígenas-FIEI, um projeto experimental da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. A outra foi realizada enquanto exercício nas aulas da disciplina de Português – Leitura e Escrita do Programa de Implantação de Escolas Indígenas de Minas Gerais- PIEIMG, com vistas à discussão e construção junto aos índios do conceito de tradução.
