The issues dealt with in this paper concern the different visions of how Assis portrayed abolition and the slaves themselves, as well as the relation such visions bear with historiography of slavery in Imperial Brazil.

A compreensão machadiana da escravidão e, principalmente, do processo abolicionista está no centro das leituras que defendem a vinculação íntima entre a literatura de Machado de Assis e a sociedade brasileira do Segundo Reinado. Tal compreensão não é, entretanto, motivo de consenso entre os estudiosos da obra do escritor. As diferentes visões em torno de qual seria a imagem do escravo e da abolição para Machado de Assis, bem como a relação que tais visões mantêm com a historiografia sobre a escravidão no Brasil imperial são as questões a partir das quais delineia-se este artigo.
