In urban centers, places of highest demand of police action, because of the social relations dynamic that exist in these spaces, it is possible to notice more clearly the basis of the kind of action the police officers choose. This article presents a discussion on performance of military police role in urban centers, based on Weberian concepts of the ethics of conviction and the ethics of responsibility as a way of reflecting on borderline between the two ethics in police action facing the crime scenario. |

A conduta dos policiais militares brasileiros durante as operações rotineiras de combate ao crime tem sido tema de inúmeros debates, entre os diferentes segmentos sociais do país. A mídia tem colaborado para intensificar essas discussões na medida em que difunde, reiteradamente, o crescimento da violência e da corrupção policial. As áreas urbanas pobres, ao serem locais de maior demanda de atuação dos agentes da segurança pública, consistem em ambientes privilegiados para que se perceba que tipo de ação é realizada pelos policiais e qual o seu fundamento. O objetivo desse artigo é propor uma interpretação acerca do desempenho da função policial militar no ambiente urbano brasileiro.
