Este artigo discute a recente contribuição de Elmar Altvater em economia política internacional cujo tema são as conseqüências econômicas e ecológicas da difusão do sistema de produção fordista. Atenção especial é dada a tese desoladora sobre os países em desenvolvimento, que decorre de suas trajetórias de pobreza e degradação ambiental prescritas no modelo de Altvater.
