O processo de globalização apresenta importantes conseqüências no plano da cultura. Culturas e identidades antes homogeneizadas pela idéia de cultura e identidades nacionais são transformadas a partir desse fenômeno. Um dos exemplos dessas novas identificações pode ser localizado rap e no movimento hip-hop. O rap surgiu como uma música dos jovens negros dos bairros periféricos dos Estados Unidos e logo foi apropriado por jovens negros em periferias de todo o mundo. “Periferia é periferia em qualquer lugar” é o título e uma canção do grupo de rap Racionais MC’s e resume a idéia de que em qualquer periferia, qualquer jovem negro e excluído está submetido às mesmas condições de vida.
