O artigo analisa as continuidades e descontinuidades do pensamento de Oliveira Vianna a respeito da ação coletiva no Brasil. Em particular, busca-se enfatizar as tensões de sua formação intelectual, assim como as conseqüências destas tensões no processo de escrita de Populações Meridionais do Brasil.
