Este trabalho dedica-se a aproximar conceitos propostos pelo Círculo de Bakhtin (em sua filosofia da linguagem) e por A. N. Leontiev (em seus estudos de psicologia), com a pretensão de tecer algumas considerações sobre o conceito de gêneros do discurso. A relação entre as ideias desses pensadores coloca em destaque, principalmente, problemas relativos ao entendimento da subjetividade (em sua tensão com as coerções sociais operadas sobre o uso da língua), à historicidade dos gêneros do discurso, ao lugar do materialismo e da dialética na análise dos gêneros e ao conceito de refração, que pode ser mais bem entendido em relação com as contribuições de Leontiev.
