Este artigo, tendo por fundamentação teórica a semiótica greimasiana e a AD (análise de discurso), ambas de linha francesa, tem por objetivo a realização de um estudo preliminar a respeito do estilo, ou seja, do éthos em "Os sertões". Noções relativas à problemática dos gêneros do discurso, questões referentes à sintaxe e semântica discursiva, noções de textualização, mediante a determinação dos modos específicos de combinação de temas e figuras, bem como o estabelecimento de contextos isotópicos, nos serão propícios para que possamos atingir os objetivos ora propostos. Devemos destacar também o estilo da obra "Os sertões", numa abordagem complexa, com um maior aprofundamento, além do estudo a respeito do gênero do romance que em "Os sertões" adquire um caráter ainda mais complexo do que em outras obras.
