Estuda-se o leitor brasileiro de best-seller e a evolução das narrativas esotéricas no país a partir da abordagem semiótica de orientação greimasiana. Para tanto, elabora-se uma lista com os livros de ficção mais vendidos anualmente no Brasil, de 1975 a 2006, por meio dos rankings de livros de uma das revistas nacionais de circulação, a Veja, a fim de discutir hipóteses quanto às expectativas de leitura do leitor moderno e, sobretudo, a transformação gradual dos livros esotéricos, nos anos de 1990, em literatura de auto-ajuda.
