La medida de la carga de dependencia demográfica más utilizada es la relación de dependencia demográfica. Este índice carece de respaldo teórico, se basa en un criterio netamente biológico. El objetivo es generar un índice alternativo para estimar la carga de dependencia económica, desde una perspectiva teórica multidimensional, que se ajuste a las desigualdades espaciales, y en el plano teórico admita la existencia del vínculo difuso entre la demografía y la economía, así como también la falta de consenso existente sobre los determinantes del crecimiento económico y la creación de empleo.
