It is stated that the transforming impact of the case was due to the deep transnationalization of a large portion of Chilean business companies and the evolution of the democratic political transition, endorsing the thesis supported by Agüero (2002) about corporate social responsibility’s «context-dependant» character. |

En este trabajo se aborda, a través de un estudio de caso, lo que ocurre con el discurso de la llamada responsabilidad social empresarial cuando los conflictos sociales se agudizan y exigen cambios en la actitud de las empresas. ¿Cómo se relacionan las tendencias empresariales con las contiendas sociales sobre el papel de las empresas? Durante la transición democrática chilena desde 1990 y hasta 2010, los conflictos sociales se mantuvieron muy acotados a situaciones puntuales, se mantuvo el crecimiento económico en un marco de estabilidad política, se fragmentó la sociedad civil y la gran empresa contó con una legitimidad social relativamente alta (Delamaza 2010). El caso de la muerte de los cisnes en el Río Cruces, atribuida a la polución causada por una planta de celulosa, catalizó la adopción generalizada de un discurso de responsabilidad social por parte de representantes del gran empresariado.
