En este artículo el autor hace un intento de desarrollar un marco teórico que permita comprender la tendencia a la caída del tipo de cambio real que viene observándose en el Perú desde 1989. Luego de descartar el enfoque de la paridad cambiaria por sus insuficiencias teóricas, y los enfoques de portafolio, que sólo pueden explicar razonablemente los movimientos de corlo plazo, el autor concluye en la necesidad de plantear el problema en términos reales.
