El artículo tiene como objetivo presentar el estado actual de la ciencia económica en el estudio de los procesos políticos y su importancia en la asignación de los recursos. La primera parte presenta una descripción. La primera parte presenta una descripción general del neo-institucionalismo, como corriente que busca generalizar la teoría económica para adaptarla al estudio de las instituciones sociales y políticas. Luego se revisan los principales avances de esta escuela en el estudio de temas como la importancia del balance de poderes, la estabilidad de las decisiones en el Congreso y la influencia de los grupos de poder en las decisiones de los legisladores.
