La correspondencia de José de la Riva-Agüero (1885-1944) con, don Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) abarca un período decisivo en la vida del escritor peruano (19051914) y ofrece un apreciable caudal de testimonios valiosos para comprender la realidad peruana en las primeras décadas del siglo y el papel que en ella juega la generación del novecientos. No es posible una verdadera historia social sin el estudio de las mentalidades colectivas junto al de las bases materiales y las estructuras de poder. En tal sentido es útil para la historia social peruana la indagación en un testimonio que, más allá de las palabras, las constelaciones de vocablos y la organización del discurso, jesuita muy revelador. Más aún el de un hombre como Riva-Agüero, de tan acusadas significaciones en la evolución de las ideas en el Perú contemporáneo.
