Este artigo resulta da pesquisa Violência de Estado no Brasil: um estudo dos crimes de maio de 2006 na perspectiva da antropologia forense e da Justiça de Transição, que envolveu pesquisadores da Universidade Federal de São Paulo e do Movimento Mães de Maio, em parceria com a Universidade de Oxford. Na contramão da cultura de impunidade no Brasil, responsável pelas violações dos direitos humanos, a investigação se concentrou na análise de sessenta casos (dentre os mais de quinhentos no estado de São Paulo) de jovens executados pela polícia militar na Região Metropolitana da Baixada Santista, entre os dias 12 e 20 de maio de 2006.
