A crítica do humanismo metafísico é peça central do legado filosófico althusseriano. Ela mostra a inconsistência teórica das versões teleológicas do marxismo e desbloqueia o caminho para a compreensão materialista, crítica e objetiva, da história social. A própria tese da autoprodução do homem pelo trabalho, metafisicamente interpretada, reduz-se a uma tautologia: o trabalho produz o homem porque ele trabalha de um modo humano. A explicação materialista de Engels pôs em evidência o papel determinante do trabalho na conexão evolutiva da mão com o cérebro, enraizando a história humana na evolução dos primatas.
