O projeto de Registro das práticas off-road como patrimônio imaterial e implantação do Ecomuseu do Off-Road em Nova Lima é uma iniciativa popular que pretende salvaguardar a tradição e os benefícios gerados pelas práticas off-road nas trilhas do município. Essa iniciativa é pioneira no país e possui caráter multidisciplinar, pois envolve três grandes áreas: o esporte, a cultura e o turismo. Desde as primeiras ocupações indígenas em Minas Gerais, passando pelos bandeirantes, desbravadores, tropeiros, produtores rurais que transportavam seus artigos para venda e para os mercados locais até os dias atuais, as trilhas de Nova Lima são percorridas por esportistas e turistas. Desta forma, visa-se o uso das trilhas a partir da concepção das mesmas como lugares de memória, com o objetivo de valorizar os diversos atores sociais, parte integrante da comunidade novalimense, e entendendo as práticas off-road nas trilhas como um exemplo de patrimônio de caráter imaterial ou intangível, produzindo conhecimentos sobre os bens relacionados à vida social aos quais são aplicados sentidos, valores e significados e que, portanto, constituem referencial de identidade para uma determinada comunidade. Espera-se que com a proteção legalizada por meio do processo de registro as trilhas e as práticas off-road serão preservadas, aumentando o sentimento de identidade e continuidade, contribuindo para promover o respeito à diversidade cultural e à criatividade da população local.
