Museums have become anchors of memory and belonging, but they can not be restricted to replication and stagnation. This article aims to discuss the possibility of mutation of this institution. For this, it discusses a number of dimensions and potentialities, such as the role of collections in museums; its symbolic dimension; its versatility; its existence as a polymorphic museum, world museum, museum forum, and in its role in the face of human and social emergencies and as an agent of transformation.

Vivemos em um período de profunda transformações e desafios nos mais variados campos e que diluem fronteiras políticas, econômicas, éticas, estéticas e étnicas, e em que as novas plataformas tecnológicas e comunicacionais transformam nossa percepção e existência. Os museus se tornaram âncoras da memória e do pertencimento, mas não podem se restringir à replicação e estagnação. Este artigo visa discutir as possibilidades de mutação desta instituição. Para isso, discute uma série de dimensões e potencialidades, como o papel das coleções nos museus; sua dimensão simbólica; sua polivalência; sua existência enquanto museu polimorfo, museu mundo, museu fórum; e em seu papel frente às emergências humanas e sociais e como agente de transformação.
