Sumario:The study was carried out along the coastland of São Paulo State (Brazil) and aims to characterize mangrove soils areas. These areas were defined by photo interpretation followed by fieldwork. Soil samples were collected and analyzed in laboratory. Results show that soils are mainly of sandy or loamy texture, the last one texture being related to a higher silt contribution. Soils are of saline character, with high sodium and sulphur contents; showing high bases saturation nonetheless showing high aluminum contents. Soils are classified as Sodic Solonchak Thiomorphic sandy texture, (Typic Aquisalid) or Saline Thiomorphic Gleysoil, in areas with predominance of Lagunculariaracemosa vegetation.
