description The purpose of this research is to develop the following question: can fauna studies contribute to the analysis of the geographic complexity of natural environments, as well as to the understanding of human apropriation of these environments? It was concluded that fauna play an important role in these issues, because it can be studied from a geographic point of view, in other words, from the complex relation among distinct spatial units given at different scales. In this way, it can make significant contributions to the identification of lacks in the historical procedures related to the protection of natural environments. Specifically, fauna studies have shown to be useful in the proposition and creation of particular kinds of conservation units and to the kind of environments that they aim to protect. This study materializes such approach in the paulista part of Paranapiacaba mountain range, especially in the Intervales State Park and surroundings – SP.

This study materializes such approach in the paulista part of Paranapiacaba mountain range, especially in the Intervales State Park and surroundings – SP.
