THE ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT - INDICATIONS FOR AN IINTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE Henrique Rattner In this article the author discusses the concept of sustainable development, considering, principally, the transformations and the crisis of contemporary society, in its various and complex dimensions. Starting from a wider understanding of the environmental question, he criticizes what is called "ecological reductionism", for, amongst other things, its consequences for political mobilization and action. He proposes a systematic and interdisciplinary approach for the study of the aforementioned question, relationships and conditions being created for the bringing together of researchers so that this proposal can be carried out, and he discusses some problems and aspects relative to the range of this objective.
