This form of political action defends vegetarianism / veganism as the only possible ethical path, and brings into question the edibility of meat of animal origin, which plays a central role in the dietary patterns of Western countries. From the performance of animal advocates, we can say that the production and consumption of this food is facing new issues that concern political and ideological aspects around the treatment of animals. In view of this more general discussion, the purpose of this paper is to present how ethical questions in favor of animals confront the system of practices and values regarding animal foods, according to the perceptions of those who did not adhere to a vegetarian diet. The idea, therefore, is to depart from the way that animal advocates establish their discomfort about the consumption of meat, and in dialogue, to think about how people who follow a carnivorous diet re-evaluate the edibility and non-edibility of the products of animal origin. To accomplish this article I employ research conducted with animal rights defenders: fieldwork, interviews and bibliographical review. In addition, 30 informal, online and in person conversations were held with residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro, who have a carnivorous diet. |

A mobilização política para a reivindicação dos “direitos dos animais” propõe o fim de todas as atividades que fazem uso desses seres sob a justificativa de que os animais seriam vítimas de “exploração” e “sofrimento”. Essa forma de ação política defende o vegetarianismo/veganismo como único caminho ético possível, colocando em questão a comestibilidade da carne de origem animal, que ocupa papel central no padrão dietético dos países ocidentais. A partir da atuação dos defensores dos animais, podemos afirmar que a produção e o consumo desse bem alimentício se depara com novas questões que dizem respeito a aspectos políticos e ideológicos em torno do tratamento conferido aos animais. Tendo em vista essa discussão mais geral, o objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar como as questões éticas em favor dos animais confrontam o sistema de práticas e valores referentes aos alimentos de origem animal, conforme a percepção daqueles que não aderiram a uma dieta vegetariana. A ideia, portanto, é partir do modo como os defensores dos animais estabelecem um incômodo sobre o consumo da carne, e em diálogo, pensar em como as pessoas que seguem uma dieta carnívora reavaliam a comestibilidade e a não comestibilidade dos produtos de origem animal. Para a realização desse artigo utilizo a pesquisa realizada com os defensores dos animais: trabalho de campo, entrevistas e leitura bibliográfica.
