Se trata de un intento por desarrollar la principal idea defendida en El ecologismo de los pobres: el modo de desarrollo capitalista y la economía de mercado no solo causaron la autonomización de la economía frente a la sociedad, sino que también desconectaron la economía de las regulaciones metabólicas elementales de nuestro planeta. Según Martínez Alier, la economía ecológica y la sociología medioambiental deberían, pues, encontrar un campo analítico y político común.
