El trabajo se propone argumentar porqué se define la frontera bonaerense como un espacio políticamente concertado. Para esto se analizan las acciones defensivas practicadas, para determinar que los recursos materiales constructivos y los efectivos militares de carrera fueron insuficientes para proteger la región. Por el contrario, se demuestra que el servicio en las milicias resultó esencial para proteger el espacio y resultó constituyente de condiciones de vecindad que posibilitaron que algunos vecinos-milicianos pudieran acceder a instancias de autoridad. Poderes locales que se desplazaban desde el ámbito urbano, la villa de Luján, a la campaña, espacios de frontera.
