En este artículo se examinan las fuentes filosóficas (Aristóteles, filosofía helenística), literarias (Sófocles, Homero) y epigráficas, hallándose significados variados, a veces superpuestos temporalmente, y también el uso del concepto en las plegarias paganas y en las peticiones oficiales.
