Sumario: | The article presents an overview of the Brazilian international trade from 1997 to 2020, highlighting the evolution of the three main commercial partnerships, as well as the exports of five goods: soybean, corn, coffee, meat and chicken. Then, it raises the discussion on the reprimarization of Brazilian exports, and whether it is adequate to characterize this trend as a return of Latin American economies to the agrarian exporting model. Results reveal multiple trends of Brazilian economy and trade: the trade-to-GDP ratio has been steady and relatively low throughout the period; the increased share of agroindustrial products in exports has not resulted in a bigger share of agribusiness in the GDP; domestic market absorbs a significant share of the production of analyzed goods; domestic consumption and productivity of analyzed goods have shown steady increase in the period. Thus, the article concludes that Brazil is a country with hybrid characteristics and cannot be simply considered an agrarian exporting economy, despite the increasing importance of agribusiness to international trade. Finally, we suggest ways that new studies can further advance this analysis to Latin America as a whole. |
